C. Dean Freudenberger has been a student of agronomy and ethics for more than 40 years. He holds degrees from California State Polytechnic University (B.A. 1952), San Louis Obispo, California, and Boston University (Ph.D. 1969). His career represents “a life-long response to our sense of call to serve in the fields of theology, Christian ethics, and agriculture.”

He taught at the Claremont School of Theology, Claremont, California for 17 years as Professor of International Development Studies, Missions, and Rural Church and most recently taught at Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota, for 7 years. In addition, Freudenberger taught courses in tropical agricultural ecology and rural community development at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California.

He his author of many publications, including Global Dust Bowl: Can WE Stop the Destruction of the Land before It’s Too Late? (1990) and Food for Tomorrow? (1984), and Christian Responsibility in a Hungry World (with Paul Minus, 1976).

Ordained in The United Methodist Church in 1955, Freudenberger served with denomination for 17 years in agricultural and rural community development across 6 continents. He served as Agricultural Programs Secretary for the Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. He was consultant to the U.S. Peace Corps programs in agricultural development in West Africa.
